On account of its strategic importance, the history of Bannu spreads over the years, dating back to the second Century BC. It has been the abode of the ancient civilization as is apparent from the remains of Akra mounds in the South-East of Bannu, and served as a Gateway for all the invaders to have an easy access to the riches of the Sub-continent.

There are myriad of theories about the origin of the word, “Bannu”. But the most widely accepted view is that the word Bannu is derived from “Bano” the wife of Shitak-the founder of Bannu and the father of Banuchi tribes.

The modern day Bannu is deemed to be the heart of the whole Southern Region with her boundaries touching the districts of Karak, Lakki Marwat and the North and South Waziristan Agencies. It is the central market of the whole Southern Region and is a safe and short route to the Central Asian Markets.

The biased English Edward could not help saying, “Bannu is a piece of Paradise” while referring to its greenery. Bannu is also famous for different spices. The Legendary River “The Kurram” and her tributaries have made it a land of meadows, crops and orchards. Every kind of crop and fruit can be sown over heart; but her banana, dates, figs and rice are unique in their taste, smell and shape.

As the land of Bannu is fertile, so is the genius of her sons. In spite of being constantly neglected, her children engraved their names on the sands of time. Among them may be mentioned the names of Ghulam Ishaq Khan, the Ex. President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Muhammad Akram Khan Durrani, the present day Chief Minister of N-W.F.P, Haji Mir Zali Khan and Qazi Fazl-e-Qadir Shaheed, the great freedom fighters, the great Hockey Olympians such as Brigadier Hamidi, Rashid Junior, Saeed Khan and the (Late) Qazi Muheb, the great athlete Noorani, Gazi Siyal the recipient of the Presidential Award for 2005 in Literature, Gulnar Begum, the nightingale of the N.W.F.P. etc.
