Department of Sociology is newly establishe department in Women Campus, UST Bannu which is located in old Main Campus Near City Police Station Bannu City.

Sociology concentrates on analyzing and understanding the ways in which society functions through various sociological paradigms. Sociology emphasizes the study of human behavior and basic social processes. Without understanding the sociological underpinnings and research areas, the social structure of the society cannot be analyzed in a scientific way. 

The department of sociology has designed the lay out of the courses in such a way as to make students aware of the social phenomena and trends. Additionally, the department also instills dynamic research skills in the students. The graduates of the Department of Sociology can find job opportunities in academic institutions, public administration offices, social services and criminal justice system. Furthermore, they can work in social work, population welfare department and vibrant NGO sector. The students of Sociology can also find their professional future in schools, nutrition and health education, public and private agencies and research desks of a number of departments. 

Sociology also impresses upon us the necessity of overcoming narrow personal prejudices, ambitions and class hatred.

Four years Bachelor’s in Sociology is one of the newest degree programs offered by UST Bannu. It was initiated to meet the fast growing universal demand for sociologists to cope up with historically unparalleled dynamics of the 21st century societies. This is all the important in countries like Pakistan, where an optimal amalgamation of traditional, cultural, religious, modern and cosmopolitan values still remains a long way away.


 Mission of the Sociology Department:

The Department of Sociology at UST Bannu aims at meeting the dire need of indigenous professional female sociologists, having local focus and universal vision which promises competencies matching the challenge of a fast changing and formidable job market in the age of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). While working on the pragmatic vision of sustainable vertical growth in near future, the Department is presently offering the undergraduate degree program. The first session of graduates will pass out in 2020. With a Scheme of Studies (SS) standardized to match the curriculum of similar degree programs offered by reputable schools of higher learning, both within and outside Pakistan, the Department strives to optimally enable its would be graduates to exercise their options for an early entry in the job market and/or pursue competitive higher degree programs. The undergraduate SS essentially requires the teachers to apply ITC based latest teaching aids along with time tested pedagogical methods of guided learning. Enormous effort is invested by the faculty with the focus that students internalize the core concepts and are well grounded in theoretical perspectives, while simultaneously learning sound analytical skills. The ultimate aim of both teachers and SS is to help students develop habit of lifelong learning with critical thinking and purpose oriented disposition.


 Scope of the Discipline:

The broad discipline of sociology underscores the soft core of human society in each respective space and time. It is an all-encompassing discipline of studies which addresses paradoxical aspects of interpersonal relations at all levels of diverse human activity. Its scope therefore ranges from temple to palace; from crime to philanthropy; from anarchy to order; from divisive ethnic, communal and sectional groups to the shared beliefs of a common culture; and from social stability to radical change. The quest of sociology is to understand and identify the differences and commonalities of actions and consciousness of social agents who universally remain in a mutually reinforcing relationship with the external environment, both natural and human made.


 Program Outcomes:

After completing the degree, the students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competent knowledge of core sociological theories, intellectual traditions and schools of thought.
  • Identify the causes and consequences of human behavior and relevant social issues, problems and inequalities.
  • To describe how sociology differs from and is similar to other social sciences and give examples of these differences and similarities.
  • Apply the sociological imagination and sociological concepts and principles to his/her own life.
  • Understand of how theories reflect the historical and social contexts of the times and cultures in which they were developed.
  • Explain how the self develops sociologically and compare this to psychological, economic and other application.
  • Gain awareness of the internal diversity of Pakistani society and the significance of variations by ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class and age.

Internship:

To get hands on training and experience of the workplace, internship opportunity will be provided to foster their professional skills. Department will liaison with the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) at USTB as well as other organizations to offer an opportunity to our students.


 Community work:

Students will be provided an opportunity to do community work in the arena to inculcate sense of responsibility towards a society.

Research work:

Research work will be highly encouraged as a thesis as well as part of projects in many courses.

Workshops, Seminars/Colloquiums and Study groups:

Additionally, some other academic practices will be proposed to polish student’s skills in their respective field.

Extra-curricular activities:

Beside academic activities, student also take part in sports, event management as well as volunteer to represent university at other related forums within and outside university.
